Embracing the Long View: Scenario Planning in the Time of COVID-19
BVU Board Member Welcome: Margaret Mitchell, YWCA
Featuring: Kyla Schneider, Ratliff & Taylor

At this tumultuous time, one of the most essential commitments nonprofit leaders must make is to ‘embrace the long view’ and engage their organizations in keeping eyes on the horizon.    This session will explore the process of scenario planning which addresses the primary question:    What might the lives of northeast Ohio’s nonprofit community look and feel like like 24 months from now?

Based on a scenario planning model developed by Jewish Federation of North America, we will explore four plausible scenarios and a number of essential questions that can provide a framework of long-term strategic thinking for nonprofit organizations, their leaders and boards.

Finances: Finding Financial Resiliency in an Era of COVID-19
BVU Board Member Welcome: Michael Cogan, Northern Trust
Featuring:  Alice Antonelli, Nonprofit Finance Fund

As the nation grapples with the COVID-19 crisis, nonprofits face tough decisions about how to sustain their organizations within an ever-changing landscape.  Without a clear sense of how long social distancing will last and how much emergency or government stimulus funding will be available, nonprofit leaders are having to make immediate adjustments while also planning for the future amidst great economic uncertainty.   While no one knows how long this global pandemic will last or what recovery will ultimately look like, this webinar is intended to give leaders of Ohio’s nonprofit organizations the opportunity to come together and pick up practical tips for preparing for the future.  Alice Antonelli from Nonprofit Finance Fund will offer lessons learned from the field on how nonprofits are approaching decision making, capitalization, and the use of reserves during this uncertain time.

Nonprofits have been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 Pandemic and many are finding their budgets squeezed.  They’re trying to balance reduced staffing and waning donations as demand for services remains. They’re finding ways to operate more efficiently, such as by speeding up receivables, extending cash flow flexibility, and creating new ways of accepting donations, all while reducing costs.  Additionally, reduced tax revenue has led to diminished governmental funding. Technology offered to business owners enables them to navigate and thrive in these unprecedented times.  Being able to offer automated, recurring, and contactless ways of payment is now vital and the preferred method for businesses, donors, and banks. Operating virtually presents challenges and organizations failing to embrace the change may get left behind.

Technology can improve efficiencies, help better deliver on your mission, and spawn innovation (especially in our New World). We want to help you with the arduous task of technology planning and budgeting for your non-profit.

In this session, we will discuss:

  • industry insights and trends
  • Solutions to streamline payables/receivables, increase donation opportunities, and reduce expenses
  • Alignment of your IT budget to the organization's strategy
  • Assessment of your current technologies
  • Prioritizing expenditures
  • Leveraging resources
  • Walk-through a sample budget worksheet that explores key buckets of tech spending
